A note claiming faculty harassment was left behind by a final-year dental student who committed suicide at a medical institution in Udaipur. In the past week, there have been two reports of student suicides.

Udaipur, Rajasthan – July 26, 2025:
In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the city’s academic and student communities, a final-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) student was found dead in her hostel room on Friday evening at a prominent medical college in Udaipur. Authorities have confirmed it as a case of suicide, and a note recovered from the scene reportedly names two faculty members, accusing them of persistent harassment.
The student, aged 23, was preparing for her final exams and had been staying in the girls’ hostel located within the campus. Hostel staff found her unresponsive during a routine check after she failed to turn up for the evening roll call. A suicide note, believed to be written in her own handwriting, was found beside her body.
Disturbing Allegations Against Faculty
The suicide note, according to police sources, names two senior faculty members from the dental department. The student accused them of continuous mental harassment, public humiliation, and undue academic pressure, which allegedly led her to take the extreme step. “She has clearly stated in the note that she couldn’t take the constant intimidation anymore,” said an officer from Udaipur Police who is part of the investigation team.
Because of the ongoing investigation, the teachers’ names have not been formally revealed. The college administration, however, has suspended both individuals pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Shock and Grief in the Campus
The news of the student’s death spread quickly, leading to unrest among her batchmates and junior students. Many staged a silent protest inside the college premises on Saturday morning, demanding justice and transparency in the investigation. Several students alleged that the atmosphere in the college had become “toxic,” with strict academic expectations and minimal emotional support.
“She was one of the brightest students in our class,” said a friend of the deceased, requesting anonymity. “But the pressure, the way teachers would insult students in front of everyone, made things unbearable.”
Police and Government Response
Udaipur Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC. The student’s body was sent for post-mortem and later handed over to the family. Rajasthan’s Higher Education Department has also taken cognizance of the matter, directing a special committee to look into the institutional conduct at the college.
A senior education officer stated, “We have asked for a detailed report from the principal and hostel authorities within 48 hours. Any faculty found responsible for harassment will face strict disciplinary action.”
Personal Insight: A Story That Reflects a Widespread Crisis
Having reported on education, youth issues, and public interest stories for the past five years across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, this tragedy hits especially hard. It is not just about one student, one college, or one note. It is about a growing culture of fear and pressure in academic institutions where emotional well-being takes a back seat to performance.
Medical and dental courses are notoriously demanding, but the absence of empathy from educators and the lack of mental health support systems can turn these places into emotional prisons. This is not the first time a student has left behind a note alleging harassment, but each time, we act surprised—as though the system itself isn’t part of the problem.
As a journalist, it is painful to report such incidents repeatedly. It feels like shouting into the void. But I continue, hoping that if these stories are told enough, loudly enough, change may follow.

What Must Be Done
Experts stress that mental health resources in higher education must be made mandatory. Independent grievance redressal cells should be established, and student feedback about faculty behavior must be taken seriously—not buried under bureaucracy.
This student’s death must not be another number in the growing tally of campus suicides. Her final note is a cry for accountability, and it is our responsibility—educators, administrators, media, and society—to listen.
