Former NITI Aayog CEO and India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, called the development “a wake-up call” for India, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen domestic competitiveness and diversify export markets.
The steep tariff, effective immediately, targets sectors including textiles, steel, and certain agricultural products, which are crucial to India’s export economy. According to experts, these duties could significantly affect small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that rely heavily on exports to the US.
Kant highlighted that India must invest in technology, innovation, and supply-chain resilience to reduce dependency on single markets. “This is not just about trade; it is about self-reliance and preparing Indian industries for global shocks,” he stated.
Indian exporters fear a loss of market share in the US, while some economists believe this move may push India to strengthen ties with Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
The Ministry of Commerce is expected to initiate talks with Washington to seek relief or negotiate alternative trade terms. Meanwhile, the government is reviewing policy options to support affected industries.
As the global trade environment grows increasingly protectionist, Kant’s warning underscores the importance of long-term reforms to ensure India’s economy can withstand external shocks while continuing its growth momentum.

अमेरिका ने भारतीय सामानों पर 50% टैरिफ (आयात शुल्क) लगा दिया है, जिससे भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था और निर्यात क्षेत्र में चिंता बढ़ गई है। नीति आयोग के पूर्व सीईओ और भारत के जी20 शेरपा अमिताभ कांत ने इसे “जागने का समय” बताते हुए कहा कि भारत को तुरंत घरेलू प्रतिस्पर्धा को मजबूत करने और निर्यात बाजारों का विविधीकरण करने की जरूरत है।
अमेरिका का यह फैसला मुख्य रूप से टेक्सटाइल, स्टील और कुछ कृषि उत्पादों को प्रभावित करेगा, जो भारत के निर्यात के लिए अहम माने जाते हैं। विशेषज्ञों के मुताबिक, इस कदम से खासतौर पर लघु और मध्यम उद्योगों (SMEs) को बड़ा झटका लग सकता है।

Just as US President Donald Trump’s administration imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports linked to oil trade, Washington and Moscow have initiated discussions over a potential energy partnership deal.
According to reports, the talks took place during American envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow, held parallel to discussions on Ukraine peace. The proposals include possible US corporate re-entry into Russia’s Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project and supply of American equipment to Arctic LNG-2 ventures.
Surprisingly, negotiations also explored the idea of the US purchasing nuclear-powered icebreakers from Russia, signaling a significant shift in bilateral cooperation despite tensions elsewhere.
India, however, finds itself caught in the crossfire. Its decision to continue purchasing discounted Russian crude oil has triggered the US tariff retaliation. Analysts warn that the steep duties will hurt Indian exporters in steel, textiles, and agricultural sectors, which are heavily dependent on the US market.
Trade experts note that while Washington penalizes India, its simultaneous outreach to Russia on energy reflects a strategic recalibration aimed at securing supply chains and countering Chinese influence.
The Indian Commerce Ministry is preparing to negotiate with Washington while exploring alternative markets in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

रिपोर्ट्स के मुताबिक, यह वार्ता अमेरिकी विशेष दूत स्टीव विटकॉफ़ की मास्को यात्रा के दौरान हुई, जो यूक्रेन शांति वार्ता के समानांतर आयोजित की गई थी। इसमें अमेरिका की कंपनियों का रूस के सखालिन-1 तेल और गैस प्रोजेक्ट में दोबारा प्रवेश और रूस के आर्कटिक LNG-2 प्रोजेक्ट के लिए अमेरिकी उपकरणों की आपूर्ति जैसे प्रस्ताव शामिल रहे।
