Delhi Accident

New Delhi, August 9, 2025 — A tragic late-night accident on Mother Teresa Road in Delhi has claimed the life of a pedestrian after a speeding Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into him. The incident, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, has sparked outrage and renewed debates about reckless driving, drunk driving, and road safety in the capital.

According to Delhi Police officials, the victim — identified as Ramesh Kumar, 42, a resident of Lajpat Nagar — was crossing Mother Teresa Road near the Moolchand underpass when the According to reports, Thar hit him with tremendous force while moving at a very high speed. The impact threw Kumar several feet away, leaving him with critical head and internal injuries. Even though onlookers hurried him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, he passed away while receiving treatment.

Driver Detained, Liquor Bottle Recovered from SUV

Police verified that patrolling cops immediately arrested the 27-year-old Thar driver, Arjun Singh, a resident of South Extension. Initial inspection of the vehicle revealed an open liquor bottle inside, raising suspicions of drunk driving.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Rajesh Meena told reporters:

“We have registered a case under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence), along with provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act for suspected drunk driving. A blood alcohol test has been conducted, and the report is awaited. If the alcohol limit exceeds the permissible range, further stringent sections will be added.”

The Thar, which sustained significant front-end damage, has been seized for forensic examination. Investigators are also analyzing CCTV footage from nearby traffic cameras to determine the exact sequence of events and vehicle speed at the time of the crash.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Grim Picture

Multiple eyewitnesses present at the scene claim that the SUV was being driven at an “extremely high speed,” estimated at over 100 km/h on a stretch where the speed limit is 50 km/h.

Sanjay Verma, an auto-rickshaw driver who saw the accident unfold, said:

“The man had almost crossed the road when the Thar came out of nowhere. The driver didn’t even slow down before hitting him. It was horrifying. After the impact, the victim was lying motionless, and the car stopped only because it hit a divider ahead.”

Others claimed they saw the driver appearing disoriented, with the smell of alcohol noticeable when he stepped out of the vehicle.

Family Devastated, Seeks Justice

Ramesh Kumar, the deceased, worked as a security guard and was returning home after finishing his night shift. Two adolescent children and his wife are left behind.

Speaking to reporters outside AIIMS Trauma Centre, Kumar’s brother, Anil Kumar, broke down in tears:

The family’s only provider was my brother.

One person’s recklessness has destroyed our lives. We demand the strictest punishment possible. Drunk driving should be treated like murder.”

Road Safety Concerns in Delhi

Mother Teresa Road, which connects key parts of South Delhi, has been flagged multiple times for overspeeding violations. Local residents say late-night drag races and drunk driving incidents are common in the area, especially on weekends.

According to Delhi Traffic Police data, over 1,500 cases of drunk driving were recorded in the first half of 2025 alone — a worrying 20% rise compared to last year. Road safety activists have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement, installation of speed cameras, and better pedestrian crossings.

Sunita Sharma, founder of the NGO Safe Roads Delhi, stressed:

“The tragedy on Mother Teresa Road is another reminder that we need urgent reforms. Random checks for drunk driving, stricter penalties, and increased police patrolling during late-night hours are essential to save lives.”

Political Reactions and Public Anger

The incident has sparked political reactions, with Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena expressing condolences to the victim’s family and promising swift action.

In a statement, she said:

“We will ensure that justice is delivered quickly. The Delhi government will also review road safety measures and intensify awareness campaigns against drunk driving.”

Social media platforms have also been flooded with angry comments, with many netizens demanding that drunk driving offenses be made non-bailable and punishable with long prison sentences. The hashtag #JusticeForRamesh has been trending on X (formerly Twitter) since Saturday morning.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The accused driver, Arjun Singh, was produced before a magistrate on Saturday afternoon and remanded to one day of police custody for interrogation. Police are probing whether Singh has a prior record of traffic violations or reckless driving.

If confirmed intoxicated, Singh could face charges under IPC Section 304 Part II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

A Growing Crisis

Delhi has witnessed a spate of fatal road accidents in recent months involving high-end SUVs and luxury cars driven recklessly. Experts believe a combination of poor enforcement, lack of road discipline, and social attitudes towards alcohol consumption contribute to the problem.

Road safety consultant Col. (Retd.) R.K. Dutta observed:

“When wealthy individuals drive powerful vehicles late at night after consuming alcohol, the danger multiplies.

A strong message that no one is above accountability must be conveyed by the law.

Conclusion: A Call for Change

As Ramesh Kumar’s family prepares for his cremation, the incident stands as another grim reminder of how preventable accidents continue to rob innocent lives on Delhi’s roads. Whether justice will be swift remains to be seen, but the public’s demand for tougher laws and stricter enforcement is louder than ever.

For now, the bustling streets of Delhi remain fraught with danger, and unless authorities and citizens act together, tragedies like the one on Mother Teresa Road may continue to repeat.
