Kanpur Kidney Racket

Telegram-fueled black market: Kidneys bought for ₹5L from donors, sold for ₹1Cr to patients. Meerut’s Alpha Hospital tainted; cops raid 4 cities.

Kanpur Kidney Racket

Arrested Kanpur kidney racket kingpins including doctors and brokers.

A small payment dispute of ₹50,000 has exposed one of the most disturbing illegal kidney transplant rackets operating across several cities in Uttar Pradesh. The network, which allegedly carried out dozens of illegal kidney transplants over the past five years, came to light after a suspicious case surfaced at a private hospital in Kanpur.

Police investigations now suggest that the racket stretched across multiple cities including Meerut, Lucknow, Noida and New Delhi. Authorities believe that nearly 40 to 50 illegal kidney transplants may have been conducted through this network, with several hospitals and brokers involved.

The case surfaced when a kidney transplant was performed at Ahuja Hospital in the Kalyanpur area of Kanpur. The recipient, identified as Parul Tomar from Muzaffarnagar, allegedly received a kidney from Ayush, a young MBA student originally from Begusarai in Bihar.

However, the deal soon turned controversial. Ayush claimed he had been promised around ₹9.5–10 lakh for donating his kidney but received only about ₹3.5 lakh, triggering a dispute that ultimately led authorities to uncover the larger racket.

Student Donor Lured Through Social Media

According to investigators, Ayush was studying MBA at Graphic Era University in Dehradun when he was contacted through a Telegram group by a broker identified as “Ali”. The group allegedly operated as a hidden marketplace where brokers connected patients in need of kidneys with financially vulnerable donors.

Ayush reportedly agreed to donate his kidney in exchange for money. The medical procedures and tests were arranged through a network of doctors and hospitals across several cities.

After the surgery, however, he realised he had not received the promised amount. The disagreement over payment eventually alerted authorities, leading to police action.

Both Ayush and Parul are currently receiving treatment at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and are said to be medically stable.

Six Arrested, Several Doctors Under Scanner

Following raids conducted on Monday, police arrested six people linked to the network. Among those taken into custody are:

  • Dr. Surjeet Singh Ahuja
  • Dr. Preeti Ahuja
  • Shivam Agarwal (alleged broker)
  • Ram Prakash
  • Rajesh Kumar
  • Narendra Singh

Investigators say the group played different roles in arranging donors, coordinating surgeries, and managing payments.

Police have also launched a search for several doctors suspected of being part of the racket. Some of them allegedly travelled between cities to perform transplant surgeries at unlicensed facilities.

How the Racket Worked

According to the investigation so far, the operation ran like an organized network.

Brokers would search for financially distressed individuals through social media platforms such as Telegram. These potential donors were promised large payments for their kidneys. Once a match with a patient was found, medical tests were conducted at private hospitals in cities like Meerut or Kanpur.

The actual transplant surgeries were often performed at unauthorized facilities in Delhi or nearby areas. Surgeons from different cities would travel to carry out the procedures.

Police say donors were usually paid ₹5–10 lakh, while patients were charged anywhere between ₹60 lakh and ₹1 crore, allowing the network to earn crores over the years.

Past Complaints Raise Questions

Authorities are also re-examining earlier complaints related to hospitals that may have been connected to the racket.

In late 2025, a controversy had already emerged involving a private hospital in Meerut where a patient’s family accused staff of misleading them about treatment and charging large amounts. That case had led to temporary action against the hospital’s license.

Now investigators are checking whether that episode was linked to the broader organ trafficking network.

Officials have reportedly sought records from nearly 50 hospitals across different districts to identify suspicious transplant cases.

Police and Health Department Response

Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said the case revealed a well-organized syndicate that exploited vulnerable people.

He stated that police have confirmed several illegal transplants and are continuing to track doctors and brokers who are still absconding. Cyber teams are also analysing Telegram groups and phone call records to identify others involved.

Health department officials have launched a parallel probe into hospitals that may have facilitated illegal medical procedures.

Illegal Organ Trade: A Recurring Problem

Illegal kidney trade has been a recurring issue in parts of India due to the shortage of legal donors.

Under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, organ donation is allowed mainly between close relatives or through strict approval processes. However, the demand for transplants often leads to black-market networks exploiting poor individuals.

Experts say thousands of patients across the country remain on waiting lists for kidney transplants, creating opportunities for illegal brokers.

Investigation Continues

Police have registered serious charges including cheating and causing grievous harm. The arrested suspects are in judicial custody while investigators continue to track down other members of the network.

Authorities say a detailed investigation is underway to determine how many illegal transplants were carried out and whether more hospitals were involved.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, with many demanding stronger monitoring of transplant procedures and stricter action against those running illegal organ trade networks.
