The wound from the tragic death of engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned in a water-filled pit during basement excavation in Noida Sector-150, hasn’t even healed yet, and now Meerut’s district administration and Cantt Board’s gross negligence has claimed another innocent life. On Friday evening, in the city’s busiest commercial area near the wooden bridge at Abu Lane, an e-rickshaw went out of control and plunged into a deep drain.

 In this horrific accident, 42-year-old driver Sunny Singh died a painful death, crushed under the e-rickshaw and drowning in the filthy drain water. Family members rushed the body to Dayawati Modi Hospital with police help, where doctors declared him dead. Sadly, no officials even bothered to offer condolences to the grieving family.

Sunny Singh, resident of Rajban Khatiak Colony and son of Gurdeep Singh, had dropped passengers at Begumpul and was heading home around 4:25 PM. The road from the wooden bridge towards Rajban has a steep slope, which turned deadly in the rainy season. Suddenly, the e-rickshaw skidded and, due to the absence of a boundary wall or safety barrier at the drain edge, flipped straight into the deep drain.

 Trapped under the heavy vehicle in the dirty water, Sunny struggled for about 30 minutes. A large crowd gathered, but no one dared jump in to save him. Fortunately, no passengers were aboard.
