Jodhpur/Barmer: Fear and uncertainty have gripped several villages in western Rajasthan after a series of unexplained deaths linked to a mysterious illness. In the past two weeks, at least 22 people have died in parts of Jodhpur and Barmer, prompting the state government to send special medical teams and place the region on high alert.
According to local officials, the deaths have been reported mainly from rural areas such as Osian, Mandor, Baytu, Dhorimana, and Gudamalani.
Health officials say the victims showed similar symptoms before their deaths — sudden high fever, severe breathing difficulty, vomiting, and rapid deterioration of health.
With more than 150 suspected cases reported so far, local hospitals and primary health centers are under pressure as doctors work to understand what exactly is causing the illness.
Villages in Fear as Cases Rise
Residents in the affected villages say the illness spreads quickly and often worsens within hours.
In many cases, family members reported that the patient initially complained of fever and weakness. Within a short time, breathing problems and vomiting followed, forcing families to rush them to nearby hospitals. Unfortunately, several patients could not survive.
The situation has created panic in rural communities, where healthcare facilities are limited. In some villages, funerals and cremations have been taking place almost daily, adding to the fear among residents.
As a precaution, local authorities have temporarily closed schools in five villages, and markets are seeing fewer visitors as people avoid public gatherings.
Special Medical Team Sent to the Ground
Taking the situation seriously, the Rajasthan government has dispatched a special investigation team from Jaipur to examine the outbreak.
The team includes experts from Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Indian Council of Medical Research, and the National Centre for Disease Control.
The team is led by virologist Dr. Anita Sharma, who has begun collecting samples from the affected areas.
Officials said hundreds of samples have been taken for testing. These include blood samples from patients, stool samples, water samples from wells and hand pumps, soil samples, and even mosquito and rodent samples to check for disease-carrying vectors.
The samples are being examined in laboratories in Jaipur and at specialized facilities in Pune for advanced testing, including PCR analysis and genomic sequencing.
Authorities hope the reports will help identify whether the illness is caused by a virus, bacteria, contaminated water, or environmental toxins.
Possible Causes Under Investigation
Doctors say the symptoms resemble several infectious diseases, which makes the investigation more complicated.
One possibility being examined is leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that spreads through water contaminated with animal urine. Another suspected cause is dengue, which spreads through mosquito bites.
There is also concern that contaminated drinking water could be responsible. In villages like Baytu, many residents depend on unregulated wells and hand pumps, some of which contain muddy water or animal waste.
Health officials are also studying whether exposure to agricultural pesticides in nearby farms could be linked to the illness.
Government Response and Emergency Measures
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma addressed the issue during a late-night press briefing, assuring the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation.
He said a full investigation is underway and promised ₹5 lakh financial assistance for the families of those who have died.
Local administration has also stepped up emergency measures in the affected districts.
Officials have deployed more than 50 ambulances, 200 ASHA health workers, and around 100 doctors in the villages to monitor patients and provide medical support.
Door-to-door health surveys are being conducted, and around 10,000 residents have already been screened for symptoms. So far, about 50 people have been placed under observation or quarantine.
Fogging operations are also being carried out in several villages to control mosquito breeding.
Police Monitoring Rumours on Social Media
Amid growing fear, authorities are also keeping an eye on rumors spreading on social media platforms.
Barmer police chief Suryakant Meena warned that strict action will be taken against anyone spreading false information.
In recent days, several messages circulating online claimed the deaths were caused by “poison gas” or other conspiracy theories. Officials say such rumors only create unnecessary panic among villagers.
Rural Health Challenges in Rajasthan
Experts say that outbreaks like this highlight the challenges faced by rural healthcare systems in desert regions of Rajasthan.
Many villages still lack reliable drinking water and sanitation systems. Despite ongoing efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission, not all households have access to clean tap water.
Extreme heat, drought conditions, and poor sanitation can increase the risk of waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
In recent years, Rajasthan has reported outbreaks of illnesses such as Japanese Encephalitis and Scrub Typhus in several districts.
Precautions for Residents
Health authorities have issued several precautionary guidelines for residents in the affected areas:
- Drink boiled or treated water only
- Use chlorine tablets in drinking water
- Maintain hygiene and avoid open defecation
- Cover food properly to prevent contamination
- Visit the nearest hospital immediately if symptoms appear
The government has also set up helpline numbers and additional medical camps to assist villagers.

Officials say the next 48 hours will be crucial, as laboratory reports are expected soon.
Depending on the findings, authorities may introduce stricter containment measures such as extended school closures or temporary movement restrictions.
For now, health teams continue to monitor the situation closely, while anxious residents wait for answers about the mysterious illness that has already claimed dozens of lives.
As the investigation progresses, authorities say the focus remains on saving lives, identifying the cause, and preventing further spread of the disease.
