Tragedy During Tuesday Prayers
A tragic stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district claimed the lives of nine devotees on March 31, 2026, turning a day of devotion into one of grief.
The incident occurred during the weekly Tuesday prayers when thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple in Maghada village near Bihar Sharif. According to officials, eight women died on the spot, while another victim, a man, succumbed to injuries during treatment at Sadar Hospital.
More than 20 devotees were injured in the stampede and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals. Doctors said most of them are currently stable.
What Happened Inside the Temple
Every Tuesday, large numbers of devotees visit the temple to seek blessings of Sheetla Mata, especially during the Chaitra month, when religious activity increases.
On Tuesday, the crowd grew unusually large by midday. Witnesses said a sudden surge of people trying to move toward the inner sanctum created panic. The temple’s narrow corridors and limited entry gates quickly became overcrowded, causing several devotees to fall.
Within moments, people started pushing to escape the congestion, leading to the deadly stampede.
A local resident who witnessed the incident said the situation turned chaotic very quickly.
“People were shouting and trying to get out. Many fell near the gate and others were trapped in the crowd,” a witness told reporters.
Rescue and Emergency Response
After the incident was reported, district authorities and police teams rushed to the temple. Rescue workers cleared the area and shifted injured devotees to hospitals.
Nalanda District Magistrate Kundan Kumar confirmed that nine people had died and several others were injured. Medical teams were deployed at the hospital to provide immediate treatment.
Authorities also began the process of identifying the victims and conducting post-mortem examinations.
Government Announces Compensation
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced ₹6 lakh compensation for the family of each deceased devotee.
The compensation includes:
- ₹4 lakh from the Disaster Management Department
- ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund
The government has also directed officials to ensure free medical treatment for the injured.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary later visited the site and reviewed the situation with local authorities.
Probe Ordered, Police Officer Suspended
Following the incident, the district administration ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine how the tragedy occurred.
Officials said crowd management arrangements at the temple will be examined, and action will be taken against anyone found responsible. As an immediate step, the local police station’s SHO has been suspended pending investigation.
Authorities have also deployed additional police personnel at the temple to prevent further chaos.
A Growing Concern at Religious Gatherings
Stampedes at religious sites have been a recurring concern in several parts of India, especially during festivals and weekly rituals when crowd numbers increase significantly.
Experts say that better crowd planning, wider entry points, and proper monitoring systems are necessary to prevent such tragedies.
For the families who lost their loved ones, however, the loss is irreversible. Many villagers gathered outside the temple and hospitals, mourning the victims and demanding stronger safety arrangements in the future.
Community in Mourning
Most of the victims belonged to nearby villages in Nalanda and Nawada districts. They had come to the temple simply to offer prayers.
As the community prepares for funerals and memorial prayers, the tragedy has left many questioning how a place of faith could turn into the scene of such devastation.
