The wait for India’s largest greenfield airport is finally coming to an end. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that Noida International Airport at Jewar will be inaugurated on 28 March by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The airport is being developed under the PPP (public–private partnership) model and will be Uttar Pradesh’s fifth international airport, expected to significantly boost the state’s economy and connectivity.

When, Where, and What It Is

Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar district near Noida, is being built as a greenfield project from scratch, not on an existing airport site. Spread over about 1,300 hectares, the first phase includes a modern terminal, multiple aerobridges, and a long‑haul runway capable of handling wide‑body aircraft.

Initially, the project was scheduled to be fully operational by September 2024, but technical and construction‑related delays pushed the timeline back. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued the aerodrome licence in March 2026, clearing the last major regulatory hurdle and paving the way for the 28 March inauguration.

Official announcement and economic impact

On the occasion of completing nine years of his government, Yogi Adityanath formally announced the proposed inauguration date during a function in Lucknow. He stated that Uttar Pradesh has requested Prime Minister Modi to preside over the ceremony, calling Jewar the “largest airport in the country” at present.

CM Adityanath highlighted that Noida International Airport will give a major boost to the state’s air connectivity and economy. According to state estimates, the airport is expected to generate around ₹1 lakh crore (100,000 crores) in revenue for the Uttar Pradesh government over the coming years by attracting airlines, logistics, hospitality, and real‑estate investments.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh already operates 16 domestic airports and four international airports—in Lucknow, Varanasi, Kushinagar, and Ayodhya. The addition of Jewar as the fifth international gateway will ease congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) and strengthen the National Capital Region (NCR) connectivity.

Infrastructure and connectivity context

Beyond the airport, the state has also invested heavily in road infrastructure, including expressways and flyovers. Yogi Adityanath noted that roughly 55% of India’s expressway network is already in Uttar Pradesh, and once the Ganga Expressway is fully completed this month, that share is expected to rise to about 60%.

This combination of airports, expressways, and improved inter‑state and international connectivity is being projected as a “growth engine” for western Uttar Pradesh, Noida–Greater Noida, and nearby industrial and IT corridors. The government also highlighted the development of Maitri Darwaza (friendship gates) at border points to signal enhanced connectivity with neighbouring states.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath:

“We have requested the honourable Prime Minister to inaugurate the Noida International Airport at Jewar on 28 March. This airport will not only be the state’s fifth international gateway, but is also expected to bring about ₹1 lakh crore in revenue for Uttar Pradesh and significantly raise the pace of economic growth.”

State government spokesperson (on connectivity):
“With Noida Airport and the expanding expressway network, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as the logistics and aviation hub of North India. Once fully operational, Jewar will reduce the load on Delhi’s airport and improve travel efficiency for millions of passengers.”

Conclusion

With the 28 March inauguration date now on the table, the focus shifts to final operational readiness, including airline slot allocations, security trials, and passenger‑service tests. Once commercial operations begin, Noida International Airport will start with domestic flights, with plans to add international routes gradually.

If the inauguration proceeds as scheduled, Jewar airport will become one of the most talked‑about infrastructure projects in India, symbolising how a single greenfield airport can reshape regional economies, ease urban congestion, and connect Uttar Pradesh even more closely with the global air‑travel network
