Stormy Start to April in Rajasthan

The beginning of April has brought a sudden change in weather across Rajasthan, with the India Meteorological Department warning of thunderstorms, rain and hailstorms in several districts over the next few days.

According to the Meteorological Centre Jaipur, two back-to-back Western Disturbances have become active, which could affect weather conditions across the state until April 4.

These systems are expected to bring gusty winds, lightning and occasional hail in many districts, while also bringing temporary relief from rising temperatures.

Weather Forecast: April 1 to April 4

Weather officials said that April 1 saw light rainfall in parts of southern Rajasthan including Udaipur and Kota. Most other areas remained dry but temperatures dropped slightly.

In Jaipur, the maximum temperature hovered around 33°C, while Jodhpur recorded about 35°C, both slightly below normal for this time of the year.

On April 2, evening showers are expected in western districts such as Jaisalmer, Barmer and Phalodi, along with winds reaching 30–40 km/h.

The most active phase is likely on April 3 and 4, when thunderstorms and hail may affect several major districts including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer and Kota. Gusty winds could reach 50–70 km/h, accompanied by lightning and dust storms.

After April 4, the weather is expected to clear and temperatures will begin rising again.

District Alert Levels Issued

The weather department has issued alerts for different districts.

Red Alert (April 3–4):
Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Churu, Nagaur, Pali, Barmer and Jaisalmer.

These areas could experience strong winds, intense thunderstorms and hail.

Yellow Alert:
Udaipur, Kota, Bharatpur, Alwar, Bhilwara and Ajmer, where light to moderate rain with possible hail may occur.

In the past 24 hours, hailstorms were reported in parts of Bikaner and Kota–Chittorgarh region, while Jaipur recorded winds close to 40 km/h.

Farmers Concerned About Crop Damage

While the rain has brought relief from heat, it has created serious concerns for farmers across the state.

Standing rabi crops such as wheat, mustard and barley are particularly vulnerable to hailstorms. Farmers in Bikaner’s Lunkaransar region reported significant wheat damage, while mustard crops in parts of Churu’s Ratangarh area were badly affected.

Agriculture officials estimate that around 10–15 percent of rabi crops could suffer losses if the hailstorms continue.

Authorities said claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana will be processed quickly if crop losses are confirmed.

Farmers have been advised to cover harvested crops and move stored grains to safer places.

Mixed Impact on Daily Life

The sudden weather change has brought mixed reactions from residents.

On one hand, the storms have delayed the arrival of extreme summer heat, offering temporary comfort to people who were already preparing for temperatures close to 40°C.

On the other hand, dust storms and slippery roads have already led to several minor road accidents in different districts. Power outages were also reported in nearly 200 villages, as strong winds affected electricity lines.

Authorities in several districts are considering precautionary measures such as traffic advisories and possible school closures if severe storms occur.

Experts Explain the Unusual April Weather

Meteorologists say Western Disturbances are common in northern India during winter months, but strong activity in April is less frequent.

Weather experts believe the current pattern could be linked to changing climate conditions and shifting wind systems in the region.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over southeastern Rajasthan is also contributing to the unstable weather conditions.

Government Preparedness and Safety Measures

Local administrations have activated emergency systems to deal with possible storm damage.

Control rooms have been opened and helpline numbers issued for emergency assistance. Relief teams have also been kept on standby to assess crop damage and help affected villages.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said the government is monitoring the situation closely and farmers will receive assistance if their crops are damaged.

What Happens After April 4

Weather experts say that once the Western Disturbance weakens after April 4, clear skies are expected to return.

Temperatures could rise quickly again, with Jaipur likely touching around 39°C and Jodhpur approaching 41°C by April 6–7.

Residents have been advised to stay updated with official weather alerts and take precautions during thunderstorms.

For now, Rajasthan is experiencing a brief spell of cooler weather — but the state may soon return to its typical intense summer heat.
