Shreyas Iyer, the Indian cricket team’s middle-order batter, is currently stable and on the road to recovery after suffering a serious spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The injury resulted from a blunt impact to his abdomen while taking a diving catch, which caused a laceration of his spleen and internal bleeding.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a medical update confirming that the bleeding was promptly arrested, and subsequent scans have shown significant improvement in Iyer’s condition. After initially being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, he has been shifted to a regular hospital room at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, where he continues to be monitored by specialists from both India and Australia.

Iyer underwent a minor surgical procedure to stop the internal bleeding and has since started routine activities such as walking and communicating with teammates and family. BCCI has also arranged for a family member to join him in Sydney. India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, conveyed that Iyer is stable and in good spirits, actively communicating and responding over the phone.

Before the injury, Iyer was in excellent form, having scored 496 runs at an average of 49.60 in 11 matches this year, including multiple half-centuries and centuries. He remains a vital player for Team India, and while his availability for the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa (starting November 30) is uncertain, the team and fans remain hopeful for his swift recovery.

The BCCI medical team continues to closely monitor his progress, prioritizing his health and long-term fitness for international cricket.
