A leisure trip at Madhya Pradesh’s Bargi Dam turned into a horrific disaster on Thursday evening, April 30, 2026, when a tourist cruise boat capsized during a sudden, violent storm, resulting in 9 confirmed deaths and a massive, ongoing, multi-agency rescue operation.

The Incident
The cruise, run by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, was on the scenic backwaters of the Narmada River near Khamariya Island, Jabalpur. There were about 30 to 45 passengers on board, including some tourists who wanted to have an evening on the water. Around 6:00 p.m. the weather turned suddenly and dangerously. A powerful storm, with high-velocity winds, struck the reservoir without warning.
Reports say the vessel lost balance quickly as it was rocked by heavy waves. The cruise was compromised in its structural integrity, and within minutes it capsized and sank into the deep waters of the dam. Survivors described the scene as pure terror and panic, with passengers being thrown into the reservoir and many fighting to stay afloat in the churning waves.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
The tragedy demanded an immediate, massive response from local and state authorities. Local villagers and laborers were the first on the scene, courageously risking their lives to pull survivors from the water and saving 22 passengers.
After these first attempts, a coordinated multi-agency rescue operation was set in motion. Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and even specialist Army diving teams rushed to the spot. It has been a very difficult operation. Divers say that the boat under the water is full of broken pieces of structure, iron rods, and other pieces of rubbish.
The poor visibility under the water makes the search for the remaining missing people very dangerous. Hydraulic cranes were brought in to help lift the heavy, damaged vessel from the reservoir floor. Intensive efforts are still being made to comb the deep waters for the remaining missing passengers, and the current death toll is 9.
